Pioneers of Philippine Art chronicles 100 years of Philippine art from the late 19th to the 20th century in the works of three artists—Juan Luna (1857-1899), Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972), and Fernando Zobel (1924-1984)—each artist a pioneer in his own way, in his own time.

Luna was the first Filipino artist to achieve acclaim in Europe's fine arts academy. He also pre-dated by 100 years the Realist movement that was to become popular in the Philippines. Amorsolo is perhaps the most beloved of Philippine artists with his paintings of landscape infused with shimmering light. Zobel was an artist of constant experimentation and his achievements as an artist, a teacher, and a patron have had profound influence on generations of Philippine artists.

Pioneers of Philippine Art: Luna, Amorsolo, Zobel was one of the inaugural exhibitions when the new Ayala Museum building opened in 2004. In 2006, a traveling version was curated by Dr. Florina H. Capistrano-Baker for the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Two exhibition catalogues, published in 2004 and 2006, with essays by Dr. Rod Paras-Perez, Emmanuel Torres, Santiago Pilar, Dr. Edward Sullivan, Dr. Florina Capistrano-Baker, and Peter Soriano, are available at the Museum Shop. A supplementary DVD, produced in 2006, is also available.
