Guitar Nights | Cuerdas ng Pag-asa

Featuring Kabataang Gitarista and Sparrow Music Guitar Ensemble

24 May 2018 Thursday
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM | GF LOBBY

Experience the inspiring power of music in a night of amazing guitar performances by the country’s best youth guitar groups.

The Kabataang Gitarista (KG) is a group of talented public high school students currently being trained in classical guitar. The students who come from high schools in Manila, Pasay and Paranaque receive free classical guitar training every Saturday morning under eminent guitar pedagogue Maestro Jose Valdez and his assistant Daniel Lopez through the support of sponsors.

At present, around 40 guitarists are currently being trained under this program. Some members who are already in senior high school and are currently enrolled in private schools due to their choice of courses, continue to be part of the program.

KG has two performing groups: the KG Quartet, an independent group composed of mostly alumni, two of whom are pursuiing classical guitar in college; and the Core Group composed of junior and senior high school students.

This evening’s program features the Core Group whose members have been with the group from almost two to four years.

Sparrow Music Guitar Ensemble: Guitar is more than a musical instrument for these children and youth living in a slum area in Payatas, Quezon City. In a community where minors can easily fall prey to violence, crimes, vice and abuses, these young boys and girls found an instrument that helps them shape their lives and a vehicle to get them out of the cycle of poverty. Musical instrument becomes the children’s outlet, it changes their attitudes and ways, and it opens their eyes to see the bigger world outside.

These young guitar students are being mentored beyond the techniques of classical guitar playing as their teachers relate the lessons to real-life experiences. Working on guitar pieces, establishing and polishing their playing techniques help them develop their characters and it teaches them to do the same in their academics. According to the parents’ testimonies, their children improved a lot in their academic performances since they started studying the guitar seriously.

Ferdinand Medina is directing the group’s holistic development with guitar teachers Zaren Malitig and Fred Saclot.
