Food Writing 101

What could be more important than food? We eat to live, and we live to eat. For many of us, food is the axis upon which our world spins: our celebrations and conversations often take place around, and because of, food. Our food is rooted in our culture and our history; our identity and our community.

Thus it is important to want to write about food, to deepen our understanding of it, to be able to craft our own individual narratives about the role of food in our lives. In this workshop, the basics of food writing will be covered: from how to write about food effectively, to learning how to taste and think like a food writer. Although this is a basic food writing workshop, this is open to everyone: from student bloggers who want to go beyond the usual restaurant reviews, to sociologists and anthropologists who are thinking about delving into food studies.

This workshop by the Ayala Museum is an introductory course to food writing.   This workshop aims to teach the fundamental principles of writing about food: (1) passion, (2) precision, and (3) clarity. The principles will aid the participants in narrating experiences and describing tastes and textures using clear and concise language.

The Facilitator

Ginny Mata is a writer, editor, and licensed baker. A former instructor of English and creative writing in the University of the Philippines Diliman, where she specialized in teaching food writing as a form of non-fiction for over five years, she is currently the associate editor of FOOD magazine (an ABS-CBN publication). She has also written for Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, the Sunday Inquirer Magazine, and has also worked on several books on food, namely A is for Adobo (Tahanan Publishing) and Bukidnon: The Filipino Frontier. She graduated with a diploma in baking and pastry arts from the International School of Culinary Arts and Hotel Management in April 2015.

The workshop fee is P 5,500 inclusive of workshop handouts, materials, and a certificate. A down payment of P 1,500 is required for slot reservation. The deadline for reservations is June 19 2016. A 10 percent discount will be given to early bird, museum and Acentive members.
